The last time we visited London our friend J. prepared this recipe for us in one of our typical wild Saturday nights in London. That means: pijamas on, ridiculously fun music and lots of great food in our friends’ apartment overlooking the Thames. After a whole day of exploring we were exhausted and starving so this delicious souvlaki was exactly what the doctor ordered.
He has shared his recipe with us so that we can share it with you. It’s perfect for little parties, lunches al fresco with friends or even easy family dinners. You can grill the meat if you are a barbecue fan, or you can cook it in the oven, as we did. Jesouvlaki is actually the perfect son of kebab and souvlaki.
500 gr. pork shoulder, cut into small pieces
Salt and pepper
The juice of one lemon
1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
2 tsp oregano
1 tsp sweet paprika
Two tomatoes, chopped
Two small potatoes, peeled and sliced
Tzatziki (you can make it yourself, here you have a nice recipe)
Mix the meat, salt, pepper, oregano, lemon juice, olive oil and sweet paprika in a bowl and let it marinate while you preheat the oven to 200º.
Once the oven is ready, pour the mix in a baking tray and let it cook for about 10 minutes. After those 10 minutes, add the potatoes and toss the meat. You want the potatoes to be cooked in the delicious sauce created by the cooked meat and the marinade. Cook for another 15 minutes.
In the meantime mix the tzatziki with the tomatos and reserve.
Warm your pita bread and prepare your Jesouvlaki: first the meat and potatoes and then add a dollop of tzatziki and tomato.
Grab the warm bread with your hands and bite!
You can serve it with a side of tomato and feta cheese salad (just chopped a few tomatoes, add feta cheese and season with extra virgin olive oil and oregano). Even more delicious if washed down with a chilled glass of Moët Chandon… Gorditos style!
