Seville has joined the trend and can finally brag about its own gourmet market. Mercado Lonja del Barranco opened its doors last year to offer a modern take on traditional tapas and other typical specialties, becoming a highlight in Sevillle’s gastronomic scene. Located inside a World Heritage Historical Site and next to the famous Puente de Triana, this gleaming new space has conquered all kinds of public: those locals who look for a cool casual dinner with friends and those tourists who look for the best jamón in town.
The 20 stalls are as different as they can be: everyone can find something delicious to try. From the traditional croquetas to a sushi counter with Sevillian influences. Not to be missed are the salmoreteca, which creates a new world of possibilities for salmorejo – gazpacho’s big brother-, and the sea food stall, where the sybarites can savor the most delicious sea food prepared right in front of their eyes with just a little bit of olive oil, salt and garlic. The produce is always the star of the show.
The jamón from Consorcio de Jabugo is second to none and the rice at Arroz & Co is absolutely delicious. We actually had the most delightful dinner on the terrace with just a great plate of jamón and a portion of paella. That was more than enough to satisfy our cravings, as seen on Instagram here. However, we regret not adding a few fresh shrimps to the menu…
The terrace is one of the best places to survive the hot Summer nights in Seville, it overlooks the river and a couple of new bars, perfect to drink a couple of cocktails after dinner (be aware of the music, though, the terrace is not made for quiet conversations). Mercado Lonja del Barranco is the epitome of that new Seville that looks ahead but it’s not afraid to be proud of its roots and it sure deserves a visit. That jamón is somehting you will never forget!
Wow it looks amazing! Another reason to go to Seville again! Is the food average priced or over priced?
Well, it’s a little bit more expensive than your average tapas bar, but it’s not overpriced if you bare in mind that you’re getting the best quality. I rather spend an extra couple of euros in order to get such an excellent produce! You should give it a try if you visit Seville. This all looks so good! I love the markets in Southern Europe with an unreasonably high passion.
That’s because it would be crazy not to have it! They are the best!
You have pretty amazing market in London, though… Have you finally payed a visit to the slow food and living market at the Rosewood hotel?
Wow, now I wish I was going to Seville this year !!!
Well, next years make sure to pay this market a visit. The key word is: jamón! ;)
