We continue our search for the most charming places to spend an unforgettable Summer in Europe. Today we travel to the Isle of Harris, in Scotland.
DO
Enjoy long walks on the beach. The beaches on the Isle of Harris are absolutely stunning. From the huge expanses of Traigh Losgaintir (Luskentyre) and Traigh Sgarastaigh (Scarista) to little sheltered coves beside the road at Na Buirgh (Borve), there are lots of possibilities to spend a fantastic day at the beach. Don’t forget to take some photographs of the Machairs: green grassy plains situated behind the beaches and covered in a mass of wild flowers in the Summer. Beautiful!
Visit the Church of St. Clement, built in the 16th century. Walk up to the tower to enjoy the magnificent views.
Make a day trip to St. Kilda, which has been declared a World Heritage Site and has the largest colony of guillemots in the world, the oldest and largest colony of fulmars, the biggest colony of puffins in Britain and over one million birds in total.
STAY
Book one of the enchanting Blue reef cottages. Based on Neolithic housing and unique in their design, these cottages epitomize the authentic Hebridean spirit. Each cottage is equipped with bicycles, picnic backpacks, beach towels and a set of golf clubs. Perfect for a couple getaway, no?
EAT
Savour the best sea food at the restaurant of the Rodel Hotel. Very closed to St. Clement’s church, this is the place to go if you want to try the real local flavours. Look out for menu specials, that’s the fish catch of the day!
Treat yourself to the best scones at Skoon Art Cafe. You can also buy some of the original oil paintings by resident artist Andrew John Craig. That would make a great souvenir, don’ you think?
Looks amazing!
