Chocolate, orange and olive oil cake

Somehow Winter has arrived. Yes, I know there’s a lot of Autumn left but the last few days have felt like Winter. Temperatures have dropped, the terrible North Sea wind is back making our ears and noses little ice blocks and our fire place is full with candles again. So all we can do is bundle up and enjoy warm cups of coffee with a piece of cake. It sounds boring and oh so cliché but the comfort that a cup of coffee and a piece of cake bring in these long, dark afternoons is exactly what makes this season bearable. Every Saturday we spend a fair amount of time at the flower market. It’s part of our routine and one of the things we love the most about living in Germany. The flower culture here is fantastic. Every season the flower market changes and it gives us a sense of time and place. Funghi porcini cream with thyme and mascarpone

It’s been raining, I’ve finally got to wear the blazer I bought in London a few months back, we are heading to IKEA this weekend to buy candles in bulk and there are already Christmas treats in the supermarket. That means it’s Autumn. Another unequivocal seasonal sign is the need for creams, soups and comfort food in general. Oh, and mushrooms. It’s mushroom season and we can’t be happier. Last weekend we prepared this hearty funghi porcini cream with thyme and mascarpone, which is basically all you will need for embracing Autumn with open arms. Everyone knows September is the real new year. Maybe it’s the child in us that never ceases to get excited / slightly depressed before going back to school and the new beginnings that September implies. Lip balms for windy days

Is there anyone out there that loves a statement lip but just wears lipbalms, lip perfectors and other products that you can reapply without a mirror  on a daily basis? And is there anyone out there that even when wearing products that you can reapply without a mirror does never reapply them during the day? Well, that’s me. However, I do carry about 50 lip products in my bag. You never know, the day might come when I want to reapply my lipstick everytime I go to the bathroom. I don’t want to be caught off guard. In the meantime I stick to easy, comforting formulas in pink / peach/ nude shades.  They give a light coat of colour to avoid the 8-hours-in-front-of-the-computer face and they moisturize your lips in a nice not too sticky way. Caramelised leek tart

These last days have been the perfect mix between visits to the flower market, afternoons sipping coffee and eating cake and long walks enjoying the faded, warm Autumn sun. Autumn is my favourite time of the year and, therefore, I tend to eat my favourite food. One of these recipes that I always prepare when I have people over, when I have to bring something to a party or when we want something really comforting to eat, let’s say after a long walk on a Sunday, is this caramelised leek tart. Actually I don’t know why it hasn’t made an appearance in this blog until today, but better late than never. Everyone loves it and they always ask me for the recipe, so here it is.I make the pastry myself, but you can buy it at the supermarket. Don’t be hard on yourself. It’s ok to cheat. Autumn squash soup with an Asian twist

Long weekend ahead? We get a cold, obviously. These past days we’ve been fighting the flu. Somehow it seems we are winning, thanks partly to the oldest weapon againt colds: soup. This one in particular has the star ingredient of the season, squash, but also some of the best ingredients to give your health a boost: ginger, garlic and coriander. To make this delicious, zesty yet velvety, uttlery comforting soup, you will need: 1 butternut squash 2 large onions, roughly chopped 3 garlic cloves, crushed 3 cm piece of fresh root ginger, peeled and grated 4 celery sticks, roughly chopped 1,5 litres chicken broth Juice of one lemon 1 tablespoon of soya sauce Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) To prepare the amazing lemony coriander oil that adds the perfect contrast to the sweetness of the squash and the onions, you will need: 2 handfuls of fresh coriander (leaves and stalks) finely chopped Zest of one lemon 1 garlic clove, finely chopped 8 tablespoons EVOO Black pepper We found the original recipe, which we’ve modified a …

The best coffee in Hamburg

With that beautiful faded light in the mornings and the first orange leaves in the trees, Autumn is slowly but surely making its way into our lives. Since this year we’ve had a few days of Summer with proper high temperatures and crazy humidity, we are looking forward to the new season, which by the way has always been my favourite. It’s the best time of the year for that slow life we love so much: candles, blankets, crispy air, rosy cheeks and afternoons in lovely cafes sipping warm, comforting lattes. We happen to live near one of the best cities to sip coffee: Hamburg. With its huge port, its lovely classic city center, the most amazing shops and that cold North Sea air that blows strongly, Hamburg is our favourite destination for a Saturday of shopping and coffee. Chanel Le Rouge Collection : Candeur et experience

So Autumn is here and it’s time to revisit the usual suspects: tartan, berry lips, pumpkin lattes and velvet. I love the crispy air and the traditions that come with it, so I can’t be more excited. However, this year Autumn brings something new beautywise, Le Rouge Collection by Chanel. And what did I pick from the whole collection? An eyeshadow quad, of course. The beautiful Candeur et experience multi effect quadra eyeshadow. After reading lots of reviews I decided to buy it but obviously it wasn’t that easy. Finally I did find it during a short layover in Amsterdam Schiphol airport (one day we’ll have to talk about the correlation between the number of layovers per year and the number of beauty products bought per year).
