Last week we told you that whenever we dream about Summer and seaside destinations, we always go back to the Mediterranean Sea. Let’s face it: we’re not those adventurous travellers that enjoy months of backpacking in the South of Asia, sleep under the stars in forgotten lonely Southamerican beaches and find little hostels and crowded rooms in small Vietnamese villages appealing. I wish we were, but we’re not. We’re tourists. And for some reason we always end up staying in Europe. We enjoy short getaways that give us a break from work and this horrible German weather. And for that, the Mediterranean Sea is the best destination for us.
We’ve decided to start a little series about Mediterranean islands. Do you want to come with us? Let’s start with the three most beautiful Croatian islands!
Brac is the largest island of the central Dalmatian group of islands. Here you will find not only sunny postcard-like beaches, but also rich cultural and historic heritage that dates back to pre-historic times, unique gastronomy, crystal blue sea and the hospitality of the local people. This is an island with 240!!! sunny days a year, with the most beautiful gravel beach in the world, Zlatni rat, which has a unique shape, like a white tongue stretched into the sea. It is unique also for the fact that it changes shape and position, depending on the wind. In Brac you will also find the most peculiar “desert“, the astonishing view from Vidova gora, the highest peak of the Central Dalmatia islands, and numerous other explored and unexplored beauties of beaches, coves and sea depths. This agro resort looks pretty nice for a special and relaxing stay and this restaurant is supposed to be one of the best of the island.
Rab is one of the greenest islands in the Adriatic. It is covered with pine forests and is well known for its mild climate which differs from the mainland. The reason for this is that three ridges are present which protect the island from cold winds from the Velebit Mountains. During the Renaissance it was ruled by Venice, so it has a mesmerizing Venetian influence which makes this destination even more interesting. Once again, hospitality is supposed to be the most important highlight of this island. That, and the vineyards and olive groves. Rajska plaza, the most famous beach of the island, is also one of the top 10 beaches in the Adriatic, so you might want to pay a visit. Not in Summer, though. I’ve been told it gets really crowded. Oh! And apparently it has quite a nudist tradition. No tan lines, then! A short walk from Rajska plaza there are other sandy beaches, some of them used by naturists, with Sahara, Ciganka and Stolac being the most beautiful and popular.
Losinj is perfect if you look for nature, sport and healthy vacations. This is a magical place that will seduce you with scents, tastes, sounds and preserved natural beauties. Here you will be able to see dolphins swim happily in the cristal clear waters, take long walks, admire its rich cultural heritage and take day trips to the small islands that surround it. This island hosts a fragrance program throughout the whole year: every month is associated with one example of the wild and autochthonous flora offering a profusion of healthy and unique fragrances and tastes. The fragrance network has expanded in all forms, from floral displays, potpourri, liqueurs, juices, cakes, fragrant decorations to gastro-menus where, in various ways, autochthonous island plants are used. I think is a pretty cool way of make the most of the local resources!
